Following FAQ best practices when choosing, writing and formatting questions and answers on pages and blogs can help improve UX, SEO, Featured Snippets and AI Overviews.
FAQs aren’t a page type — they’re a content strategy. But FAQ best practices often get overlooked. That’s a missed opportunity, because when FAQs are chosen, written and formatted well, they earn trust, answer the questions patients are already typing into Google and AI tools, and support your SEO, AEO and GEO strategy.
Here are the questions about FAQ best practices we hear most from clients (and our answers).
FAQs reflect what matters most to your target audience. Every day, people use digital tools to ask health-related questions and navigate care options. They’re looking for clear, trustworthy, direct information. Anticipating and answering common questions:
Yes, and increasingly for reasons that go beyond traditional rankings. FAQ content naturally aligns with:
As a result, FAQs can help earn visibility in featured snippets like People Also Ask boxes and AI Overviews, whether or not the user clicks through to your site.
Comprehensive, well-organized FAQ content builds topical authority. Thoroughly answering a subject signals the depth and expertise search engines and AI tools associate with credibility, strengthening E-E-A-T.
FAQs are also a genuinely engaging way to frame content marketing assets. A blog post structured around FAQs (like the one you’re reading right now) can cover a lot of ground while staying scannable and user-friendly. They offer a familiar, attention-grabbing construction to readers.
The biggest FAQ pitfall we encounter is not only a missed opportunity, but it can also actively cause harm. A dedicated FAQ page can quickly become a catch-all “dumping ground” for unorganized content, leading to:

Start with data: find the questions people in your market are asking through:
A competitive gap analysis can identify the questions your competitors are targeting that resonate with your market.
Clinicians, care team members and front desk personnel hear certain questions repeatedly via phone calls, patient portal messaging and in person. Consulting with providers and staff offers valuable insights into your audience’s concerns that may not surface through keyword research.
As you determine which questions to incorporate, ask: What does someone need to know before the rest of the page makes sense? Including these basic building blocks nurtures more qualified audiences from informational intent toward the next stage of their journey.
Take a strategic, page-specific approach: Incorporate high-interest questions and answers where they’re most relevant within your broader content ecosystem. For example, answer “What should I bring to my first chemotherapy appointment?” on the chemotherapy page itself. This is where it’s most logical given the page’s larger structure and the patient’s progression through their journey.
You can also group related FAQs in an accordion positioned where they’re most meaningful within the page (or, if the answers are more supplemental, in an accordion at the bottom of the page). The key rule: Never repeat questions answered elsewhere on the page.
Not every post needs a dedicated FAQ section, but weaving in relevant, high-interest questions and unique answers in a natural, conversational way always has value.
Using the FAQ format as the driving structure of a blog or other content marketing asset (podcast conversation, video or social post) is more strategic than creating FAQ web pages about your services or patient and visitor guidelines. An FAQ blog is easy to scan and promote, earning traffic and engagement. It’s also well-positioned to achieve content marketing objectives: informing and engaging readers, building awareness and credibility, and nurturing long-term relationships with your audience.
Pose the question itself in a heading, whether that’s an H2, H3 or an accordion tab clickable container title. This approach helps:
Nielsen Norman Group recommends several research-backed FAQ UX best practices:

Write the question to match the language users enter into search bars and AI tools, not how your organization talks internally. Plain language, clarity and brevity are key and also happen to be what voice search and AI tools respond to best.
The copy that follows the heading should answer the question directly and immediately. No warm-up, no fluff. Lead with the answer in the first sentence or two, then add supporting details. That’s the structure search engines prefer to pull for featured snippets and what AI tools tend to cite.
FAQ schema is structured markup that explicitly tells search engines and AI tools your content is organized as questions and answers. Instead of an algorithm inferring a heading is a question, schema removes the guesswork and states it outright. (For an example or to learn more, check out Google Search Central’s guide to Q&A pages.)
Implementing schema effectively can make it easier to get your content sourced accurately when an AI system assembles answers and clarity is critical. Schema markup should pair each question with its direct answer exactly as it appears on the page, with nothing added or reworded.
Weaving FAQ best practices into your content templates drives consistent quality and scalability. Set clear rules directing appropriate FAQ use, heading and accordion guidelines, schema requirements and placement so every new page or post meets the same standards.
Consistency is what builds brand trust and credibility over time. It’s also what keeps FAQ content easier to manage and maintain. A template with clear rules is far easier to audit and maintain than a patchwork of pages written and maintained by individual contributors with different expertise levels, each handling FAQs a little differently.
FAQ best practices are an ongoing part of how you structure content for people, as well as the search engines and AI tools they’re using to find you. A standalone FAQ page may make sense when you have a genuinely broad set of evergreen questions that don’t belong on any other page. It also makes sense when you use the FAQ format to structure a content marketing asset. What we’d steer you away from is a catch-all FAQ page mixed into your core, foundational site pages, obscuring useful information that belongs on an existing page.
It depends on what the format is signaling. Unnumbered FAQs tend to read more naturally, while numbered FAQs are appropriate if an inherent or logical order applies to how patients or customers ask them. For example, numbered FAQs work well when the post is framed as a countdown or a comprehensive list (or “listicle”). Numbering signals scope and completeness to the reader, and it gives you a clean structure for jump links and internal navigation. Either way, keep the order logical: group related questions together.
Accordions, sometimes called dropdown FAQs, work well past 10 or 15 questions because they save space and reduce cognitive load. Give questions more visual weight than answers (bold or slightly larger), keep spacing consistent between items and skip multi-column layouts, which make scanning harder rather than easier. And build in accessibility from the start.
